HISTORY OF CENTRE CREATION

The main goal of the Centre is to organize material and technical support and participate in complex research and expeditionary activities in the polar regions of the Earth.

Hystory of the centre

The State Institution “Republican Centre for Polar Research” was established on September 25, 2007 on the basis of the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 1211 “On the establishment of the state institution” Republican Centre for Polar Research “under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

In June 2014, the Republican Centre for Polar Research became part of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and assigned to the Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences.

Over the years, the leaders of the centre were Oleg Anatolyevich Smorchkov (2007-2009), Vladimir Ivanovich Filimonov (2011-2013), Oleg Viktorovich Snytin (2014-2016), Igor Mikhailovich Pilshchikov (2016-2019). Since December 2019, the head of the centre has been Vladimir Anatolyevich Ryzhikov.

The main tasks of the Centre

– participation in the preparation and implementation of state and international programs in the field of research and use of the polar regions of the Earth;

– participation in the preparation of draft regulatory legal acts in order to ensure the conduct of polar research and the fulfillment by the Republic of Belarus of the obligations assumed under the Antarctic Treaty, the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, conventions, recommendations of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings;

– development and strengthening of international cooperation in the study of the polar regions of the Earth and logistics;

– organization of material, technical and logistical support for polar research, development of instrumentation and life support elements of the polar infrastructure, as well as their repair, prevention, modernization and timely replacement, work in the field of labor protection;

– organization of information support for the population and popularization of knowledge in the field of studying the polar regions of the Earth.
